A
n oxidation patina has formed on the surface of a green painted utility mailbox exposed to atmospheric weather conditions. Precisely defined as the loss of at least one electron when two or more substances interact, on a molecular level oxygen burns up the free radicals contained in the paint. This creates a dull chalky residue, which can be marked with a finger wipe, leaving symbols in the form of cryptic messages.
