rt involves reactions to current experience and social conditions, exploring psychological emotions as tempered by philosophical positions. Ironically, it was the invention of photography, with its ability to render finely detailed depictions of appearance, which motivated many painters away from realism and towards abstraction. Effectively about independence and creative freedom, abstraction allowed artists to explore more personal and less conventional visual modalities. During the 19th century, the art movements of Romanticism, Impressionism and Expressionism all incorporated abstract elements. This conceptual progression, facilitated by the Enlightenment, also moved authority and power away from religion and instead embraced science and technology. These trends became more widely practiced and eventually mainstream, so that by the 20th century abstraction reached a saturation point known simply as "Modern Art."
