hat makes something interesting? More to the point, how does art function to arouse and hold attention? Perhaps this process unfolds in two stages. The first stage would be stimulation based on the initial visual response. This involves the specific pattern of electromagnetic energy that forms on the retina and the resulting chromophore twitching that signifies sensation. This pattern of energy is defined by relative wavelength intensity and position. Next follows the attention holding stage, based on mental processing and pattern interpretation. Here the viewer's intellect and experience comes into play, both elements of extreme variability.
