t night, the midway becomes an entirely transformed parking lot, a gaudy make-believe world of strangeness. For me it provides a rich visual experience of cultural entertainment, operative on many interesting levels. Humans seem temporarily to enjoy confronting abnormal environments, as long as things remain securely under control. Of course, for the carnival barkers this spurious condition is not so provisional.
