lmost all social movements start as a protest or revolt against the general state of culture and society. In this regard, transcendentalism was looking to define spirituality in a way that reconciles understanding made possible by advancing scientific knowledge. It "transcends" the physical and empirical and recognizes an individual's intuition, rather than only accepting established doctrine. Some personal experiences seem to validate these concepts.
