Lionhead

   Centered
Geometric
Amalgamation

T his image is easily categorized within my “Found Mondrian” series. Urban geometrical abstract extractions are always satisfying to consider, especially when they include an animal spirit totem. Like an ancient petroglyph, this stylized Lion symbol embedded in an architectural edifice brings up questions of meaning and purpose: to cure the sick, to maintain a good relationship with supernatural powers, to restore harmony, to reclaim a lost soul, to make good hunting possible, to forecast the future, to cast spells, etc.. Perhaps imbued with latent cultural and religious significance, in the current place and time the head-spirit is mostly unnoticed by all that pass-by. Art can remain even though artistic intent and audience interpretations evaporate.

“I don't go into the studio with the idea of "saying" something. What I do is face the blank canvas and put a few arbitrary marks on it that start me on some sort of dialogue.” - Richard Diebenkorn
