he plan was to photograph star trails from a position including the otherworldly sandstone concretions that comprise Rock City, but instead the night was full of storms. This circumstance proved to be wonderfully fortuitous, as the scene become even more eerie and weird, with a magnificent lightning show firing for hours to the south and east while no rain fell at the capture location. Several mercury-vapor street lamps cast a directional green light over the area, contrasting with the color-balance of the sky and clouds lit by the natural powerful electrical discharges. Judicial use of light-painting techniques to fill-in shadows and highlight interesting geological features added to the visual mix. Even the shadow self decided to participate, and a good time was had by all.
