Concretion

   Sedimentary rock
Mineral cement
Together grow

S hot at sunset and extending into the night, pure magic is experienced in the Smoky Hills of Kansas. This image is a view of huge sandstone concretions located at Rock City just south of Minneapolis. Covering an area about 200 yards long and 50 yards wide, approximately 200 exposed sandstone boulders define the landscape. Concretions form when a dissolved mineral in ground water crystallizes about a nucleus creating a hardened composite mass. Over time, these hardened structures resist erosion more than the surrounding material.
