rees die standing up - here is a familiar image subject asking questions of what constitutes the natural. These unfortunate perennial woody plants are dead by virtue of growing in a location that became flooded by humanity's desire to fashion an artificial recreational fishing lake. Yet in their stoic condition, they now provide a new ecological environment for divergent life. After a long hike around the northeast side of the reservoir, as I was engaged making this photograph, woodpeckers were very busy hammering on the expired tree trunks, perhaps digging out insect infestation. From a distance, would aliens observing this planet consider man's activity as unnatural? When we look at nature, are we looking at ourselves?
