I
n developing my semester studio plan, one of the articulated questions to address relates to long-range goals. This has required a fair amount of contemplation and self-analysis. As I am driven to make art in a steady stream, which must ebb and flow across time, the issue becomes more broadly applicable. Rather than consider the production of art as the goal, I am more concerned with how the process and production of art affects my thinking, awareness and understanding. From this viewpoint, my ongoing long-range goal is to improve the quality of my thought. Eventually I hope to become a master thinker, and rid myself of native egocentrism and sociocentrism. I recognize this is difficult to achieve, but one conduit is enabled by critically and creatively approaching problems, and this creatively is supported by an active and passionate artistic orientation to existence. Being an artist can help to foster critical thinking; critical thinking improves the artistic experience and strengthens the subsequent result.
Perhaps more specifically, simultaneously I refine what I know while exploring limitations on a path to better awareness.
“The road leading to a goal does not separate you from the destination; it is essentially a part of it.” - Charles DeLint
