T o have an influence eventually results in change. An iconic oil diptych times two is here presented addressing problems of identifying affect and effect relationships. This is a study of an old gasoline pump located at the corner of the stone chicken-coop at Spring Hill Ranch. I have photographed this subject before on other visits, and decided on this occasion to get close and concentrate on the details. Especially interesting is the surface patina developed over time as a result of environmental pressure. As the oil industry affects our environment, so the environment affects industrial artifacts. We exist in a circular closed loop system and the effects of actions and behaviors cannot be absolutely predicted. Much is beyond control, but it is entertaining to work with homonyms, which themselves are sometimes reiterative. The case has been made that the true nature of art resides in linguistics.
