Prairie Lullaby

   Trail of dreams
From a hilltop
In tall grass

W e hiked up to the top of a ridge line in the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve just before sundown to capture star trails. It took a long time for the sky to get dark enough for this purpose. In the meantime, many interesting things occurred. Fireflies lighting, nighthawks swooping, deer grazing, evening primroses blossoming, coyotes yelping, and an odd pack of noisy teenage hikers wandering. But the stars were few and far between. Perhaps the summer haze reduced their presence. But when a bright red moon suddenly emerged over the eastern horizon it was all over. I really didn't think I had much to work with, but some judicious Photoshop processing nursed this image to life.
