Prairie Border

   Grass expanse
Wide open sky
Frequent winds

T here are lots of reasons why the Flint Hills are so intoxicating. Part of it stems from the jolt being there provides to time and space orientation. The landscape is much different than what I usually encounter in my local vicinity, with an openness and associated tranquility that calms the soul. But even more powerful is the feeling invoked of timelessness: this is how things were. Or at least after several hours of hiking, it is effortless to imagine how things might have been.

“The region west of the Mississippi continued in the popular mind to be a strange land for which the reports of explorers and travelers did the work of fiction, and Cooper's Prairie had few followers.” - Carl Clinton Van Doren
