Sky Graffiti

T he enjoyment of photographing at night seems to become more intense with each successful episode. It is very exciting when visual conditions are favorable and you have control over the technical performance necessities. Part of the challenge is to pare down to just the essential photographic gear for the job. It is hard to keep track of things in the dark, so less is more easily managed. And of course dressing to stay comfortable over an extended period as the temperature plunges must also be considered. I now have a good handle on these requirements, but feel there is still room for improvement. Some of my colleagues suggest this activity would be better suited for spring. But ice and snow are especially attractive at night, and are only available at his latitude in the winter.

“Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.” - Stanley Horowitz
