old comfort - cyclic change promotes development. Many temperate plants have a vernalization requirement and must experience a period of low winter temperature to initiate or accelerate the spring growth and flowering phase. In fact, many plant species must endure a prolonged period of cold before flowering occurs. It seems like the extreme conditions over the last few weeks have been sufficient to fulfill this requirement, so spring might be especially vigorous this year. Only three more months remain before we find out.
