H uman behavioral patterns are not merely the result of individuals adaptively responding to the local environment; rather all human endeavors are influenced by cultural ideology. Culture is a complex of socially transmitted information supported by systems of symbolic reinforcement based on stored information. A simple definition of culture is “a historically derived set of shared ideas, values and beliefs underlying behavior”. Keep this in mind when looking around.

“Social learning allows human populations to accumulate reservoirs of adaptive information over many generations, leading to the cumulative cultural evolution of highly adaptive social institutions and technology.” - Boyd and Richerson
