he form-forming potential of sensation is here analyzed. In how many ways can the same object be visually described? The only palpable limits reside in the expertise and imagination of the photographer, and perhaps more importantly, the time available to address the opportunity. When documenting the State Fair, I remain on the move, stopping only briefly to grab segments here and there. Thus I pass by the “Ferris Wheel” many times on each episodic visit. Because of its size, shape, location, movement and symbolism, it always offers visual stimulation. Reviewing the sequential temporal image stream, it appears repeatedly in many different guises and within various contextual settings. Of course different optics and lighting conditions prevail, in addition to an ever-evolving creative approach.
This image was made from three handheld panographic exposures made with the pinring, which is one of the six lensless optics mounted in my pinhole turret. The idea is to render a fragmented result to investigate issues of space and time, recognizing that the whole is different from the sum of its parts. Exploring the Gestalt effect, visual identification of whole forms is generated from a collection of simple lines and curves. Conscious experience functions globally because human perception demands each component be considered as system ingredient of dynamic relationships.
