Woodlet | Nice grove Small stand of trees Lacking undergrowth |

creeching to a halt, I dropped the kickstand and pulled out my camera. As I walked back up the trail to a vantage point allowing an unobstructed view, Tom rode up and recognized my intended subject. “Yeah baby, nice grove!” he proclaimed, and peddled on towards Pilot Grove. Shooting with my Zeiss 45mm f2.8 Tessar lens, I could not get far enough away to include all of the scene, so I made a series of shots for post-process stitching.
This handsome little group of trees made me think of how the town Pilot Grove got its name. Allegedly in the 1820's, Pilot Grove's name originated from an ancient grove of hickory trees used as a navigational landmark, located on a high prairie in the immediate vicinity.
“Trees were so rare in that country and they had to make such a hard fight to grow, that we used to feel anxious about them, and visit them as if they were persons. It must have been the scarcity of detail in that tawny landscape that made detail so precious.” - Willa Sibert Cathe
