On the Tube | High speed Whizzing along Rider position |
P
eople who are habitual subway users become as automatic as the trains. They appear to function as an integral component of the mechanized system. Acting indifferent and individually isolated, they establish personal space and retreat into their own personal world. By either reading or computing as the train progresses, the seasoned passenger ignores the journey and its environment. Contact with other riders is also avoided, even as the space becomes cramped with many bodies. Acknowledgement of the presence of others seems to increase the tension in this peculiar atmosphere.
“The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenements halls and whispered in the sounds of silence.” - Paul Simon
