Wasp

   Slender body
Constricted abdomen
Membranous wings

I really enjoy combining vintage lenses with the latest digital technology. I got my new Canon 5D Mark II, and am becoming familiar with its controls and capabilities by photographing around the house. This insect study was made with the Vivitar Series One 90-180/4.5 Flat Field Macro Zoom lens introduced in 1975. Originally designed for medical imaging which could benefit from high magnification at significant camera to subject distances, it features outstanding performance. It is not a good traveler, as the 18 element, 12 group design is rather heavy at around two pounds.

“The combined abilities and quality of image of this Vivitar Series 1 lens are not even approached by any other zoom lens. It is by far the best close-focusing zoom going.” - Modern Photography 1978
