Golden Algae

   Toxin producing
Fucoxanthin pigmented
Photosynthetic chrysophytes

C ontinuing on the hike around the small upper lake at Pertle Springs, at the south end is the input source. Last time I was here, this area was a shallow pond, but has now dried-up to just this slow moving streamlet. The water looked rather putrid, choked with algae and surface covered with refracting patches of oil-like slicks. Probably this recent development is not a healthy condition for the downstream fish population.

“Golden algae generally cannot compete with other forms of algae, but if something knocks down other forms, then golden algae can flourish and bloom.” Joan Glass
