Translucency | Thoughts still cling Rainy day interface Look out the window |
T
he old Magnolia Opera House, at the western end of Warrensburg's downtown area, is here rendered through a window across Pine Street from inside the Fan Club's second floor. I have always been rather fond of rainy days, and am constantly on the look-out for visual possibilities provided by inclement weather. On this excursion, I was shooting with my Nikon 55mm f1.2 lens wide open and focused to just two feet away creating image blurs on purpose. In effect, just a sliver of empty air essentially is in focus, with everything else indistinct. This vintage lens is endowed with magnificent bokeh providing great light smears. As an artistic expression, the technique allows for concentration on form relationships, color shapes, and emotions while avoiding intricate detail. When approaching this window, however, I simply positioned myself approximately two feet away from the glass and thus focused on the rain drops, allowing the Opera House to dissolve into an attractively vague impression.
“The dripping... well, if it happens, it happens; it does not take anything from the work. The dripping just proves that you were not trying to control the work, but the work was developing by itself and if it drips, it's a natural part in the evolution of the work.” - Keith Haring
