his restored pioneer fort was established and garrisoned by the U.S. Army from 1842 to 1853 in unorganized territory, primarily to control the native Indians. By 1853 the army abandoned the fort, as the frontier boarder had moved much farther west. All the buildings were purchased by local settlers at a government auction, and the former military post became the focal point of an emergent town by the same name.
