   On a ridge
Row of trees
Sketched sky

R ecognizing that very little of the landscape in the American Midwest has not been altered either directly or obliquely by man, I speculate on why these trees line up. Probably they were planted, or allowed to remain, as a protective windbreak. If a windbreak is 30 feet tall, wind speed is reduced by 50 percent 300 feet downwind. They also look good for an aspiring drive-by-shooter. This image was made traveling east on U.S. Route 50 towards Jefferson City with the Zeiss 45mm f2.8 Tessar lens. U.S. Route 50 originally was a major road stretching from California to Maryland prior to the development of interstate highways.

“I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” - Jimmy Dean
