pon arriving in Medicine Lodge late in the day, after many hours of driving, I was happy to relinquish the controls over to Terry. Settling into the backseat after a brief fueling stop, we headed west on U.S. 160 towards Coldwater, a 42 mile section of road designated as The Gypsum Hills Scenic Byway. This region is also known as The Red Hills because the ground contains iron oxide, perhaps better known as rust. Although weary and not functioning at peak “drive-by-shooting” efficiency, I attempted to capture the impressive hills, mesas, buttes, canyons, and broad vistas generally not associated with Kansas.
