I
am fascinated by the concept of combining multiple art movements into single images. So when I stumbled upon the impressionistic/cubism work of Malcolm B on Flickr, I decided to see if I could create something similar to his abstractions. I shot the base image with a CPC 28mm f2.8 Marco lens mounted on my Canon 5D, focused to 8 inches in the UCM student Union. In Photoshop, I duplicated the layer twice, ran the find edges filter, thresholded the results, and did a motion blur in both horizontal and vertical directions. I then ran the displacement filter against the horizontal and vertical lines using the tonalities of the original image. Changing blend modes and transparency completed the effect. What I ended up with isn't that close an emulation, but is interesting.
