Giant Conic Morel

   Molly moocher
Sponge mushroom
Highly polymorphic

A lthough morels can pop up just about any time under favorable conditions, an extremely large fungus is a curious find. This one was spotted just off interstate 71 in Western Missouri, a few miles north of Nevada. Imprecise on-location triangulation determined this magnificent mushroom specimen is thirty feet tall! Colossal objects like this are nectarous; one should always photograph them. Of course when traveling with Ownby-Wan Kenobi, giant oddities are frequently encountered and must be documented in support of “the force.”

“Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter.” - Yoda

Comments

May the fungal force be with you!

The comic nature of this giant mushroom derives from a “disturbance of
expectations.” As fungi are relatively small phenomena, the enormous
specimen generates laughter precisely because it disrupts the common
understanding, or vision, of its natural form. This disturbance of
expectations is pleasurable, not disturbing, since it enables the
observer to partake in the fantastical whimsy of the human imagination.
