solated clumps of dormant grass rise above the ground surface and trap the weak angular winter sunlight. Although interesting in their wiry patterns, the surrounding flora is what provides the contrast. This is a low and damp area with a spongy feel that is a bit reminiscent of tundra found in the far north, not something usually established in Missouri fields. Or perhaps I just have not noticed this phenomenon before and it is a common occurrence. In any case, I plan to go back in the spring and summer to see what develops here. It is possible, however, that after a few spring showers and thawing temperatures this area will become a quagmire.
“In a sense, each of us is an island. In another sense, however, we are all one. For though islands appear separate, and may even be situated at great distances from one another, they are only extrusions of the same planet, Earth.” - J. Donald Walters
