Field

   Wide unbroken
Element set expanse
Fading by degrees

S tanding out in the middle of a large meadow, the diversity of grass species are nicely distributed across the earth. Orange clumps of Andropogon virginicus especially distinguish themselves by harmonizing with the setting sun. Also known as bunchgrass or broomsedge bluestem, this plant grows throughout the southeast US from the 25-inch mean annual precipitation belt eastward. It seems to thrive in abandoned fields, hillsides, thin woods, and is frequently found in disturbed areas. I feel a certain kindred spirit, as I am also frequently found in disturbed areas.

“The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence. Fences have nothing to do with it. The grass is greenest where it is watered. When crossing over fences, carry water with you and tend the grass wherever you may be.” - Robert Fulghum
