his image addresses the theory that every civilization must finally fall into ruin and disintegrate. Before the economy crashed violently, there were already many small towns struggling. The evidence of this was readily apparent on my trips last summer to Arkansas and Tennessee, with many closed businesses and abandoned municipalities scattered across the land. I suppose if you are already deeply depressed, the most recent indicators of financial malaise are not so disconcerting.
