A
new twist on an ancient art. I really like it when a student provides visual and technical inspiration. So it is when Phil Williams made a triangular pinhole for an extra credit assignment in my “Materials and Processes” class. Working together to expand on the technique, we went to the prepress area and looked through the imagesetter silver-recycle bin to find opaque film and small exposed image elements to use as optics. I first tried a registration mark which made a promising image. Next I cut a small triangle out of an exposed and fully developed area of black film with an Exacto knife to expose this image, shot out in the Grinstead parking lot. Great abstractions can be rendered which feature the unique aperture shape as a distinguishing feature.

Below is the registration mark pinhole image. This opens up a range of possibilities for future pinhole geometry explorations.
