ecently I have been working with defocus to produce indistinct and unidentifiable images which are evocative and artistically compelling as amorphous abstractions. Basically what I am after is 100 percent good bokeh. This is more challenging than expected, as shapes, colors, and lens characteristics converge. But it does open up another creative line of attack, a form of photographic impressionism.
An interesting historical side note, the impressionist art movement of the 19th-century resulted from a reaction to the newly established medium of photography. Initially photography's presence undermined the traditional artist's depiction of nature and their ability to mirror reality, so they became more abstract, expressing perceptions rather than creating exacting replicas.
“There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward you can remove all traces of reality.” - Pablo Picasso
