L ast week I was in northeastern Arkansas on a consulting assignment. One evening I ventured over to the Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge which was only 18 miles east of my motel. The New Madrid earthquake of 1811-12 changed the Big Lake area from a free-flowing river system to its present lake/swamp environment. The lake is shallow with an average depth of only 3 feet. The swamp areas are characterized by stands of black willow, buttonbush, and towering bald cypress trees.
