Bordering Mallard Lake
Great Swamp remnant

P art of the Big Lake Wildlife Refuge, this is Mallard Lake which is managed by the State of Arkansas. A long narrow, shallow body created for fishing and as a breeding ground for native birds, the basin is completely surrounded by a gravel road adjacent to the shore. Featuring numerous Cypress trees, this habitat is home to many waterfowl and other abundant bird species, including bald eagles. It also supports tenacious athletic deer flies which enjoy feeding on visiting photographers.

“One solution I've found that works for deer flies is to run full speed down the trail, then turn around (now running backwards) and killing them as they try to keep up with me. The only other way is to wait until they land on my head, then smack them.” - JFB
