Eureka Flatiron | Short parallel Long non-parallel Trapezoid wedge-shape |
T
he term flatiron refers to the shape of certain buildings designed to fit on an acute street corner, made famous by the one built in New York City in 1902. Chronologically, however, this Eureka Springs structure which was completed in 1880 was the first trapezium in North America. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1890, but soon a second flatiron was erected. In 1925 the second flat-iron succumbed to fire. The brick and stone remains were taken down and the site stood vacant until 1989 when the third flat-iron was constructed, incorporating architectural design elements of both previous structures.
