A
sunny day in Lawrence, Kansas provides an opportunity to engage in some “shooting-from-the-hip” street photography. This is a capture technique I developed while still studying photography at RIT circa 1979, after I purchased the compact clamshell Olympus XA. The idea is to eschew using the viewfinder, but rather zone focus and fire the shutter spontaneously from waist level. This approach means incidental pedestrians are captured completely candid, as they are unaware that photographs are being made. The classic XA was amazingly small and compact and could easily be operated with one hand. This method is a little bit harder to accomplish with the much larger Canon 5D, but can still be effective.
