I n the western history collection reading room of the central Denver Public Library is a two-story wooden oil derrick replica. Both a curious and impressive structure, this image was captured standing directly underneath and looking up. The wild color comes from the lights used to accentuate the display. Its purpose is to commemorate the role that oil played in the development of the American west.

“Our oil problems are only going to get worse. Our trade balance is only going to get worse. So we have to slow the growth of U.S. oil consumption, particularly imported oil consumption.” - Sherwood Boehlert
