F ormalism is an art concept which primarily values composition and appearance; an image is appraised in terms of visual construct and medium. As part of this aesthetic, everything necessary to appreciate an artwork is contained within it. The broader context, including the creation motivation and historical backdrop, is considered to be of secondary consequence and nonessential. This does not mean that such work is devoid of conceptual elements, but rather means that communication is direct without required embellishment.

“Properly treated, formalism is not an empty thing but a potentially very powerful answer to this spiritual challenge.” - Bridget Riley
