Austere

   Somber bleak
Cold forbidding
Severe disposition

Awareness may be informed by an internal visceral emotion, or depend more on external events by way of sensory perception. Although principally a desolate ambience, this overall experience also provides an exhilaration and celebration of seasonal variation.

“We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aid, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn.” - Henry David Thoreau
