Attenuate

O nce upon a time, a vehicle exhaust system had two important jobs to perform - removing dangerous engine gases and reducing engine noise. In my neck of the woods, there is a subculture of sociopaths that believe the function of an exhaust system is to make noise – a loud disruptive obnoxious racket. The only point of this is to attract attention and force the community to endure unnecessary auditory pollution as a way to demonstrate dominance. Although noise ordinances exist, the law enforcement agencies are indifferent. Part of the problem is they are of the same mentality and seem to also delight in making their own brand of superfluous commotion. For a little town, this place is unpleasantly raucous.
