T he definition of the word gaze is to look steadily, intently, and with fixed attention on radiation patterns of interest. This is the primary activity of a photographer, with the added desire to record these patterns as visual records. There is a group of social activists that have attempted to redefine the word gaze to vaguely deal with how an audience views the subject presented in a visual record. This falls under the umbrella of analyzing visual culture, which is often exercised as a form of syntactic nonsense - words put together in a way that do not make sense. This very unintelligibility is presented as profundity, so the tendency is to accept the “theories” rather than risk being indentified as dim-witted.

“The gaze signifies a psychological relationship of power, in which the gazer is superior to the object of the gaze.” - Jonathan Schroeder
