A
nother splendid old sign, this one in Manhattan Kansas, shot from across the street late in the day. These artifacts help to define the old downtown areas of many Midwestern towns. It is interesting to observe how communities value their heritage as represented by the condition of old structures. Historic movie theaters are a bellwether in this regard. They don't make them like this anymore.
During the 1930s, Art Deco replaced other styles of theater architecture to become the typical design motif. This sign is an example of Art Deco with its streamlined shape and typography, but seems tacked onto buildings from an early era.
“All that I desire to point out is the general principle that life imitates art far more than art imitates life.” - Oscar Wilde
