Raw material conversion
Noxious byproducts

T echnology, society and ecology intersect in open loop systems in which resource extractions traverse through the organization to become waste. In the history of mankind, we have always been a messy entity willing to foul our own nest. Recently during the industrial revolution this tendency greatly accelerated. Short term gain almost always dominates long term consequences. The planet, however, is a closed loop system and eventual adjustments to this imbalance forecast an unfortunate destiny. Of course the dinosaurs didn't last forever either, but man is allegedly the most intelligent live form.

“Nature operates without any waste products. What is rejected by some organisms provides food for others. The organization of industry on this principle–with the waste products of some branches of industry providing raw material for others–means in effect using natural processes as a model, for in them the resolution of all arising contradictions is the motive force of progress.” - Fiodor Davitaya
