In a Fog

I n visual art, aerial perspective refers to establishing depth by rendering distant objects as paler, less detailed, and bluer than near objects. Exaggerated aerial perspective is one of the appealing characteristics of fog. The relatively large water vapor particles significantly scatter the light adding a veiling luminance that diminishes local object detail. Scattering is more pronounced for radiation of high energy short wavelengths. Increasing object distance thus rapidly reduces contrast, desaturates color, and causes a color shift towards blue.

“The atmosphere is much too near for dreams. It forces us to action. It is close to us. We are in it and of it. It rouses us both to study and to do. We must know its moods and also its motive forces.” - Cleveland Abbe
