ost words have multiple definitions and thus the meaning of language is always referential to context. When contextual clues are ambiguous messages become imprecise, open to multiple and equally valid interpretations. Frequently different words are used to express the same concept, based on the assumption that the receiver of the message will select the appropriate definition from those officially sanctioned as available. Spending time thoughtfully reading a dictionary helps one to better understand this dilemma.
A work of art consists of form, whose excellence depends on the artist's talent, and content, whose value lies in the importance of the conveyed meaning delivered in the communication. The words ''content'' and ''subject'' are sometimes used interchangeably, or may be used as distinct terms referring to either form or meaning. In other words, sometimes ''subject'' is used to describe form, and sometimes it is used to describe meaning. Likewise, sometimes ''content'' is used to describe form, and sometimes it is used to describe meaning.
We are always “subject to” the inherent lack of precision associated with all modes of communication.
