ere is a diptych featuring holiday colors I made as a test for another new lens acquisition. This time the lens is a Nikon 55mm F1.2 manufactured about 1970. Because the aperture is so wide, the lens is extremely fast and features a razor thin depth of field - at full aperture when photographing an object at 60 cm the depth of field is a mere 6 mm. Nikon made a few of these lenses for NASA and some were left on the moon by the astronauts.
The bokeh produced by this lens is outstanding and is the main reason I bought it. I promise to show that characteristic in a feature post. But in this shot I was interested in evaluating detail resolution. So the subject is a flat field, wet leaves on a tennis court just after a layer of ice has melted. They appear reasonably sharp to me.
A wonderful side effect of the development of digital photography is the availability and affordability of magnificent old lenses.
