P hases of activity can often be inferred from viewing a structural profile crosscut section in the context of urban archaeology. For the investigator, a demolition site slice through a row of once connected stores on Main Street offers evidence of what was. The law of superposition generally applies, and this can help identify features from each perspective, as they can be placed in sequence and related information can be interpolated.
