T
he great castle ruins at Ha Ha Tonka State Park are impressive. The structure was built by Robert McClure Snyder in the early 1900's on a cliff-edge overlooking the Niangua Arm of the Lake of the Ozarks. His goal was to replicate the magnificent European castles of antiquity, and to guarantee authentic construction techniques European architectural craftsmen were employed. After completion it was operated as a hotel until 1942 when it was consumed in an immense conflagration. Evidence of the fire is revealed by examining the stone walls as blackened areas still persist even after years of weathering.
