T he exact boundary between visible and infrared radiation is not precisely defined. Wavelengths longer than 700 nm progressively become less detectable to the human eye and will reach a point of invisibility. By blocking the visible frequencies and only recording the infrared, digital sensors can extend our knowledge of the material world. I have made so many infrared photographs over the last year that the results now seem quite natural. I just ordered a new 1.8 neutral density filter to use with my IR gear which will reduce the intensity by six f-stops and launch new visual opportunities.
