Conjugate Foci

No limit for the far point

A lthough once considered wonderful, catadioptric lenses are currently much maligned in the photographic literature. Conventional lenses of long focal length are large and heavy. To overcome these limitations, a catadioptric lens uses mirrors to "fold" the optical path, bouncing radiation backward and forward inside the tube. Thus the lens is physically small, and because the mirrors replace some large glass elements, much lighter in weight. Typically they lack an adjustable diaphragm and operate at a fixed f-number equal to the focal ratio of the total optical system. The major complaint directed at this lens design concerns the ring shaped bokeh they generate. So I have decided to use highlight blurring beyond the focal plane to advantage, and feature the out-of-focus donut shaped rings in impressionistic dream treatments.
